what separates a great mage from an average one is that a great mage will fiddle with their specs, and gemming to figure out how to max out their dmg as well as well as do that little extra on boss fights to help out the raid.

They don't chain cast they move too much don't have the gear/gemming/spec just flat out don't know how to play a mage..and they picked a mage because it looked easy.

WRONG! A great mage will give Abec daily bj's to secure a raid spot.
